Basement Renovation Pics

About two years ago we decided to reno our basement. It had low ceilings, was dark and dank. We avoided it but  the kids needed space to play and we needed an additional bathroom so we decided to go for it.

Here is what it looked like before (this picture actually makes it look better than it was. Check out that blue carpet!)

And here are a few photos of it now that it is renovated. The space is a light brighter, drier and more livable. Our kids play here a lot and we let them make messes and get a little crazy down here (then we make them clean up and calm down but that's another post for another day).

The Ork prints are a favorite and they capture two places we've lived and loved. Need to add more LA and Manhattan prints. In general, we still need to decorate the basement - we've left it for the kids to play in for the time being. Things I want to do include:
  • Buy new sectional and big comfy chair
  • Buy more Etsy art
  • Style up the office area - with a bold paint colour and a custom fitted desk
  • Add more storage!
Have you renovated your basement lately? Any decorating tips to share with a busy family?

Dining Room Redo

Our dining room is one of my favorite places in the house. It is bright and cheery and we spend a lot of time there as a family.

Here is what it looked like when we bought the house:

I liked the red paint that it came with and left it up for many years but when we had to re-paint the room due to the electrical work we had done it was time to lighten and brighten. Here is what it looks like today (I'll try to post more pics later because I didn't get any of the table without the table cloth)

I'll try to get some pics of the table this weekend. Plans for the future don't include much. Once the kiddos are older and spill less food, I'd like to put a rug under the table but that's about it.

What do you think? Any finishing touches you'd recommend?

Hallway headway

Today's room is the front entryway. I don't have any before shots but trust me when I tell you there was nothing worth photographing.

Here are some current state photos:

Items on the to do list for the hallway include:

  • refinishing the stairs or perhaps painting them (this is TOP priority) in case you are reading this BP ;)
  • getting a bold geometric rug. Rugs are hard! So bossy!
  • painting out the front hall closet and fixing the mirror (it is located in the top right corner and in desperate need of some TLC)
  • More pics or if I get really brave some wallpaper.
Any suggestions?

Keeping it real in the kitchen

Hey there,

So today I'll be posting more pics of my kitchen. It started out like this:

Actually, we added the glass doors to let in more light and the striped roman blinds to match the blue counters. Yes, that's right - blue acrylic counters. So lovely. The kitchen used to be really dark with no windows at the back and acidic yellow paint.

Here is what it looks like today:

The cupboards are Ikea and we had a finish carpenter install crown molding to customize them. The flooring is slate tiles which I sometimes find too dark but at the time they didn't have the hardwood floor tiles like they do now and we really needed something durable that wouldn't show every little thing. I would LOVE to have an island instead of a wall between the kitchen and dining room but it just wan't worth the cost and upheaval since that wall is a major load bearing wall for the house.

Future kitchen plans include:
- redoing the backsplash tiles (my husband thinks this is crazy but I want something more modern - or subway tiles)
- painting the cupboards - I have never been a fan of the creamy color and would prefer bright white

What do you think? Any suggestions on small improvements?

Room by Room

To get started with this blog, I am planning to do a post per room. I'll provide details on the room  when we bought the house 8 years ago, what we've done so far, and what we'd like to do.

The living room is one of the first rooms people see when they come in the front door.

It used to look like this:

We kept the taupe wall color from the previous owners and just added our furniture which was also mostly taupe. So...there was a lot of taupe going on with some red, dark brown, and black accents. That's a knock off Barcelona Chair by the fireplace called the 'Chicago Chair'. Not surprisingly, it broke a few years back.

Our furniture was in major need of upgrade after our kids stained it and it was a perfect time to redo the room when we had the knob and tube wiring redone. The plan was to go really light and bright because the room (and the house) can get quite dark in the summer from the tree out front.

Here are some pics of the living room as it stands today:

There are still a lot of things to be done to this room. One of the biggest is to redo the fireplace. I want to have a wood mantel installed over the brick (painted white) and then have built in cabinets on either side of it in white. My dad drew up the plans. I just need to go forward with the whole thing. I also need to put up matching drapes (I have been trying to decide between the white and blue ones) And - we need to get a new coffee table. We were looking at getting one of the bleached wood ones with a medal frame. When the kids are older, we'll get a nicer rug but for now the Ikea Sisal is holding up nicely.

And that's where we're at.... Any recommendations or things you've done with your living room that worked out well?
