A Tiling Dilema

The thing about following a lot of blogs and Pinterest is that it makes you always want more. I am constantly seeing things that I want. For instance, the tiles in our kitchen. My lovely husband painstakingly installed them when we re-did our kitchen but I can't help but lust after all the gorgeous tiles I see in magazines and blogs.

A girl can always dream! As a reminder here is what our kitchen backsplash tiles look like:

Not too shabby eh? I suppose I can live with the tile for a little while longer ;)

Shades of Grey Living Room

Hello friends,

The title of this post may be a little misleading. There is nothing naughty going on here just a living room design that mixes several shades of grey for a sleek urban preppy look. I love these cool toned colors and think they would suit an urban loft space beautifully. There are many similarities in this design to my own living room (sofa, coffee table) but I think my room will end up being more cozy once we get the fireplace surrounds and built-ins. Nuff said - here is the actual design: Shades of grey Living Room

What do you think? Anything you'd do differently?

The Wonders of Wallpaper

Have you ever had to take down old wallpaper? It's a terrible task right? We had to remove purple butterfly wallpaper from two of the bedrooms in our house when we moved in and I swore that I would never put up wall paper (and also that it's only fair that whoever put it up takes it down).

Recently though, I've started seeing all these gorgeous rooms with wallpaper as it has come back into style. I love the way it looks but then I remember the pain of installation and removal and it holds me back. That is until I saw 'temporary' wallpaper! The answer to my dreams! Yes - it can be stuck up, unstuck and re-stuck with no trouble! Yay!

I would really like to try out one of these products in our bedroom. Maybe something like this:
Available here

Or maybe something a little darker like this:

There are so many options to choose from! I also love this one:

Wallpaper is an investment - so I need to think on this for bit. Let me know if you have any recommendations.

And for today's parting thought, I leave you with this gem:

Coffee Table Reveal

Hi friends,

We set the new West Elm coffee table up in trial mode and decided to go for it. My lovely husband Aaron got it built and it is good to go.

Here is what it looked like in trial mode (to avoid re-stocking fee we didn't build it until we were certain that it was staying):

And here it is assembled:

And on a totally unrelated topic, here are my lovely blooming spring flowers (these make me happy):

To Ottoman or Not?

Hello friends,

It has been a busy Saturday in the Marshall House between various lessons and a birthday party. The good news is that I was able to sneak in a quick trip to West Elm! Despite the chaos that ensues when one brings two very active boys into a furniture store with lots of breakables, I managed to purchase a coffee table for the living room. Not sure if I love it yet, but they have an excellent return policy so there are no worries.

Here is the table I got (you may recall me drooling over it in an earlier post):

I'll try to post some pics tomorrow of what it looks like in the living room. It looks okay so far but I am torn between getting an actual coffee table (advantage that is open and will provide more visibility to my built-ins when they arrive) OR an ottoman (advantage that it would be more functional and comfy and it might provide a more unified look with the sofa). Something like this:

Anyways....for the next few days I'll be pondering my options and hope to report back soon with the final decision.

In the meantime, I leave you with the following parting thought:

Get in my hallway

So our front hall is calling out for a runner. We've been getting by with a remnant from the stair carpet but it's high time that we invested in a real runner for the hall.

As a reminder here is what our front hall looks like:

And here are some of the amazing rug options under consideration:

Any preferences? I find it really hard to envision what a rug will actually look like so I'll probably try out a few of them, see which ones looks best and then make a decision. This can sometimes be tricky with rugs purchased online but hopefully I can find some places with flexible return policies.

For Friday's thought du jour, I leave you with an awesome looking poster I just saw for one of my very favorite shows:

vintage auto racing prints

The boy's bedrooms are in need of decoration. They are bright and open but lack a theme (and to be honest they are mostly covered in Lego and a bjillion toys). Sorting through the toys and giving away the ones they no longer play with away is top of the list. But I digress.....I wanted to share an exciting progress update. I've finally ordered vintage auto racing prints! With some trusty ikea frames and custom matting to accommodate the size - I will soon have fun wall d├ęcor for my oldest son's room.

Here are what the prints look like:

Currently, we just have the magnet board up so this will be a nice addition to the overall look
As you can see, space was a close runner up theme wise. And for the parting thought today:

Scary Laundry Room

Warning! This post contains scary before shots. Yes - its true my laundry room is a mess. It is the only room in the house we have to store stuff and it is full to the brim with junk. My husband has some time off before his next project begins so I am hoping that he will be able to help clear out some of the stuff. Once the heavy lifting is done, some additional shelves, paint, and curtains will complete the look.

So....without further ado - I present to you the before shots of our scary laundry room

Here are a few inspiration pics for going forward:
