Laundry room awards

Hi friends,

It's been one of those days today. A dear friend of ours passed away and we are feeling a little sad. I was trying to come up with a topic and it occurred to me that I'd really like to focus on some of the uplifting work out in the blogosphere rather than all the items on our to do list.

That got me thinking about laundry rooms and all the great possibilities out there - and that brought me to the laundry room awards. That's right - today I will be recognizing some of the amazing laundry rooms around the blogosphere. The world needs more awards and recognition and I am here to help (I might even make this a regular series if all goes well)

The first award is for 'Most popular on Pinterest' and it goes to this lovely laundry room redo by Kelly at the View along the Way blog.

Every day I see multiple images of this laundry room. People love to pin it.

The next award is for 'best use of color' and it goes to this turquoise number:
The award for most unique laundry room goes to this black and white number
Would you feel like you were being watched in this room? The laundry is definitely a great spot to get inventive and this room really goes for it. It from gorgeous blog  Flodeau

The award for 'Prettiest' goes to this elegant laundry room with its bird wallpaper

The award for most blogtastic laundry room goes to this green number here

The award for most serene and spa like goes to Jen at Rambling Renovators

Who wouldn't want to do laundry here?

And one final award - for the scariest laundry room:

This one goes to yours truly ;) We've tidied it up a little but still so much to go

Dining Room Updates

Hi friends,

Hope you all had a spectacular weekend. The sun was shining here and things were good. I did manage to get a few small updates for the dining room. In a wonderful turn of events, we have acquired two new dining room chairs. These are the best kind of chairs - the free kind. The kind that come from one's neighbor who  has a clean house with no bedbugs. Yay! Free chairs.

Here is what they look like:

I've wanted upholstered chairs for the dining room for like ever. But with two messy little boys I've been making due with our white scoop back chairs. They are invincible  Since these new chairs were free I am not afraid to use them. They will flank each end of the table and the kids will still use the white chairs.

In another fun update, I got the new dining room art back from the framer. If you recall from this post, I purchased a photo art print from Etsy for our empty dining room wall. It is now framed and ready to be hung. Just need to round up my husband for some picture hanging fun.

Here is what the print looks like framed (ignore the reflection of me taking the photo - I promise that is not part of the art):

What do you think? Will it look good in our dining room?

It's Terrarium Time

Hi Friends,

Happy times again - it's the weekend! Lately, I've been seeing a lot of terrariums in the local flower stores and they look amazing. Once we finish the built-ins in the living room I want to add one of these to the shelves. It will look good and keep our air clean - I just need to get better at watering and tending the plants. Let's just say that I haven't had the best luck with plants in the past.

Whimsical Bathroom Updates

Hi friends,

As I've mentioned before, our upstairs bathroom is starting to look tired. It needs a total overhaul but that is a ways off so in the meantime I am thinking about some ways to spruce it up. Here is what it currently looks like:

And here are a few updates I am considering:
Palladian blue bathroom
Specifically, I would like to replace the wall shelves with some new art and replace the light fixture (which I never really liked anyways). A light like this may also look good:

In the longer term, I'd love to redo the floor, the vanity, the mirror and the awkward shower curtain hanging arrangement but that is for another day! I think these smaller updates will do until then.

Drape Decisions

Hi friends,

Today's topic is living room drapes. I have been trying to find the perfect drapes for our living room for two years. I have literally tried and taken back four different pre-made drapes. Thanks goodness for return policies - I never know how something will look until I actually see it in the room. The lighting and furniture placement make all the difference.

Up until two weeks ago our drape situation looked like this:

Since then, I took down the blue drapes and put up both white drapes. My husband thought it looked too simple and bland with just the white sheers. And I tend to agree, the room needs a more pizzazz.  Problem being is that the dark grey couch and plaster molding that covers the top of the curtains make it hard to find drapes. Anything dark ends up looking like an extension of the couch.

We think we have a plan though....since the pale grey Dwell fabric on the pillow looks so awesome against the couch, we are thinking of getting drapes made like this:

They are available pre-made on Etsy so the price isn't too bad if we decide at some point it's not perfect.
I'll have to change up the pillows so it's not so matchy matchy. Maybe add some pops of green like this pillow from Tonic Living
What do you think? Now that the built-ins and fireplace surround are underway, I feel like we need to gussy up the rest of the room.

Fireplace Progress Report

Hi friends,

More good news on the fireplace and built-ins. The tiling is DONE. So exciting. In order to add tile to the existing brick facade, our tiler had to attach two layers of non-flammable concrete board. This provided a flat surface for the tiles. Here is what it looked like:

And here is what it looks like with the tiling:

We chose larger ceramic tiles for the hearth to make it look like a slab of polished marble (some grout lines are still visble but over time the grout will darken and it will look seamless).  It was also important that the hearth blended nicely with the maple floor.

Our carpenter came today to take final measurements with the tile in place, and in a few weeks we'll get the wood surround for the fireplace and the built-ins on either side. Can't wait! We'll have to paint it ourselves as the carpenter doesn't do painting but perhaps we'll splurge and get a professional to help us.

Elegant Coastal Retreat

Hi friends,

Today, I am dreaming about powder blue, spa like bedrooms. I pulled together this cool blue peaceful design in Olio board. The crystal light is one of my all time favorites. I really wanted to get one of these for our dining room but at $1000K plus it wasn't in the budget. Since then, I've seen a number of high quality knock-offs so I definitely see one in my future (maybe a little smaller than this one).

Oh and before I go - guess who finally made it to the new Target Canada store in her hood this past weekend?
And I loved it! They had a huge home decor section (hello Nate Berkus) and all kinds of great sheet sets and    other odds and sods.

House Tour: Cozy Chic Renovation

Hi friends,

Today I have another fabulous house tour to share with you. We visited good friends on the weekend and have some pics from their gorgeous renovation to share with you.

Come on in!

First up is the kitchen - a sleek, modern industrial design with shiny cabinets and a marble backsplash:

Next, we move to the dining room with it's stunning Jonathan Adler chandelier, Dwell fabric drapes, and Revere Pewter Benjamin Moore paint

and finally is the family room with its cozy chic vibe and eye candy fabrics (and if you look carefully - my sons photo bombing)

So glad I was able to share these pics with you all. This renovation has been truly inspiring for me and I hope it will be for you too.
